The Government of Canada has launched a new call for proposals under the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), inviting community organizations to apply for funding to support projects that improve the wellbeing, inclusion, and social participation of seniors across the country.
Announced by Employment and Social Development Canada in Gatineau, Québec on June 2, 2026, the program is designed to help older Canadians remain active and engaged in their communities while addressing challenges linked to rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
For the 2026–27 funding cycle, the government has introduced several changes to the program. The maximum grant amount has been doubled to $50,000 per project, with a cap of $25,000 for capital expenses. Additional requirements now include mandatory use of the Grants and Contributions Online Services portal for applications, possession of a Canada Revenue Agency business number, and a stronger focus on organizations whose core mission is supporting seniors.
The program funds a wide range of community-based initiatives that promote volunteerism, intergenerational mentoring, awareness of elder abuse, and social inclusion. It also supports capital improvements that enable better access to services and community programs for seniors.
The call for proposals remains open until July 14, 2026, and aims to encourage more targeted and impactful community projects that directly benefit older adults.
Officials highlighted that the New Horizons for Seniors Program plays an important role in strengthening social connections and improving quality of life for seniors, while complementing broader federal measures aimed at affordability, including increases to Old Age Security, expanded benefits programs, and access to healthcare and essential services.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to ensuring seniors can remain active, supported, and financially secure within their communities.
