A new factsheet released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Albania reveals significant challenges facing older adults across the country, highlighting the urgent need for stronger long-term care services and community support systems.
The publication, Aging in Albania — Insights into Long-Term Care for Older Adults (2025), was developed under the UN Joint Programme “Lifelong Empowerment and Protection in Albania” and funded by the SDG Fund. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the care needs, living conditions, and support gaps affecting Albania’s aging population.
According to the findings, most older adults prefer to remain in their own homes as they age. However, many face limited access to caregivers, affordable support services, reliable transportation, and specialized healthcare. The study also identifies significant gender and regional disparities that influence the quality and availability of care.
The report highlights the growing burden placed on families and care providers, as demand for long-term care continues to increase. Financial pressures, workforce shortages, and limited community-based services are among the key challenges affecting both caregivers and older individuals.
UNDP Albania emphasizes the need for policy reforms and investments that improve service accessibility, strengthen community care networks, create care-sector employment opportunities, and promote dignity, independence, and social inclusion for older adults across the country.
As Albania’s population continues to age, the findings underscore the importance of building a more resilient and inclusive long-term care system capable of meeting future demand.
