Beirut — June 1, 2026 — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of a worsening humanitarian emergency in Lebanon, nearly three months into the conflict. More than one million people remain displaced, while soaring food prices, lost incomes, and strained markets are pushing basic nutrition out of reach for vulnerable families.
Since March 2, WFP has reached over 700,000 conflict‑affected people nationwide with emergency food and cash assistance. On average, nearly 150,000 people per day have received hot meals, ready‑to‑eat rations, and food parcels. However, humanitarian access remains fragile, with daily bombardments and displacement orders disrupting aid delivery.
WFP has deployed 24 humanitarian convoys to southern Lebanon, Tyre, and Hermel, though more than half faced delays or cancellations due to movement risks. Assistance includes emergency cash support for half a million Lebanese citizens and over 100,000 Syrian refugees, alongside food distributions in more than 500 shelters. Since the onset of the crisis, nearly five million hot meals have been provided, prioritizing newly displaced families.
Food insecurity is worsening nationwide. A recent analysis shows 1.24 million people — nearly one in four — face acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or worse) between April and August 2026. Prices have surged, with vegetables up 20% and bread up 15% since the escalation. In southern Lebanon and Nabatieh, more than 80% of markets are no longer functioning, while Beirut’s markets remain operational but under strain.
To stabilize food supplies, WFP facilitated the entry of 250 metric tons of wheat flour through a Jordan corridor, supporting around 10,000 households. The WFP‑led Logistics Cluster has also assisted 64 humanitarian partners, transporting nearly 2,500 m³ of cargo.
WFP urgently requires USD 112 million between May and August 2026 to sustain life‑saving food and cash assistance. Without predictable funding, the ability to support displaced families and vulnerable communities will be at risk
