Expressions of Interest have opened for the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, a major funding programme designed to support the repair and conservation of historic sites and buildings across England that are considered at risk.
The fund is managed by Historic England and provides capital grants to restore listed buildings, conservation areas, registered parks and gardens, scheduled monuments, and other historically significant sites in need of urgent investment.
The programme aims to protect and revitalise heritage assets while also delivering wider social and economic benefits. Key priorities include improving public access to historic places, strengthening civic pride, supporting local prosperity, and ensuring heritage contributes to climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
Grants of up to £1 million are available for eligible projects, primarily covering major capital works such as repair and structural conservation. Routine maintenance and minor repairs are generally not funded, except in specific circumstances.
Funding is open to organisations or individuals with legal responsibility for a heritage asset, with a strong emphasis on community benefit. Priority is given to projects in areas experiencing higher levels of deprivation or limited access to investment, reflecting a focus on inclusive regeneration.
Private homes, places of worship, and commercial buildings are only considered in exceptional cases, ensuring that funding is directed primarily toward public or community-focused heritage preservation.
The application process is currently open through Expressions of Interest, with the next deadline set for 7 June 2026. Additional funding rounds are expected to follow, providing ongoing opportunities for heritage restoration projects across England.
Overall, the fund represents a targeted effort to safeguard culturally significant sites while supporting community development, environmental resilience, and long-term sustainable use of historic assets.
