The ACT Government has awarded funding to eight community-led organisations to deliver projects focused on reducing emissions, strengthening climate resilience, and encouraging practical climate action across Canberra. The initiative is part of the Community Climate Action Grants Program, which supports local groups in developing solutions that address climate change at a grassroots level.
The program provides a total funding pool of $300,000 over two years, with individual grants of up to $30,000 allocated to selected projects. These projects are designed to help communities take practical steps toward lowering emissions while also improving preparedness for climate impacts such as heat, extreme weather, and environmental stress.
The eight funded projects span a range of community sectors, including schools, environmental organisations, cultural groups, sports associations, and community service networks. Initiatives include creating climate-resilient green spaces, delivering workshops on sustainable living and energy use, improving water-smart gardening practices, and supporting emissions reductions through changes in transport and energy consumption habits.
Several projects focus on improving environmental awareness and participation among diverse communities, including culturally and linguistically diverse groups and First Nations communities. These initiatives aim to ensure that climate action is inclusive and accessible, with practical education and engagement tailored to local needs and lived experiences.
Other funded activities include upgrades to community infrastructure to improve climate resilience, such as increasing vegetation cover, enhancing shade in public spaces, and introducing renewable energy solutions like solar power systems for community events. These measures are intended to reduce emissions while also making shared spaces more comfortable and sustainable.
According to Minister Suzanne Orr, the program reflects the importance of empowering local communities to take meaningful action on climate change, with an emphasis on practical, visible solutions that improve everyday life. The initiative builds on earlier ACT climate funding efforts and expands support for both emissions reduction and adaptation-focused projects.
