The Nigerian Red Cross Society has called on Nigerians, government institutions, and development partners to strengthen compassion, unity, and collective responsibility in addressing growing humanitarian challenges across the country. The appeal was made by the National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga, during the commemoration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2026 held in Abuja.
Speaking under the global theme “United in Humanity,” the President emphasized that humanity should remain the guiding principle in responding to increasing hardship affecting communities both in Nigeria and globally. He stated that the theme represents more than a slogan and should serve as a practical principle guiding actions and decisions, particularly during difficult times.
The President highlighted that millions of Nigerians continue to face significant challenges including displacement, disasters, and economic hardship. He stressed that collective action and stronger social responsibility are necessary to ensure that vulnerable populations are not left behind during ongoing humanitarian and economic difficulties.
Referencing Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross Movement, Prince Adeaga reiterated the importance of humanity and solidarity, emphasizing the enduring principle that all people share a common responsibility toward one another regardless of differences or circumstances.
He also praised the efforts of Nigerian Red Cross volunteers working across difficult and hard-to-reach communities nationwide. According to him, the volunteers remain central to the Society’s humanitarian work because of their dedication to assisting people in need without discrimination or delay.
The President noted that humanitarian work is becoming increasingly complex due to challenges such as restricted access to affected areas, misinformation, and evolving humanitarian crises. He stressed the need for greater discipline, accountability, and consistency within humanitarian operations to ensure effective responses and maintain public trust.
In his remarks, he called for stronger support from government authorities and stakeholders, emphasizing that humanitarian action should be recognized as an essential component of national stability and social dignity rather than an optional intervention.
The President also referenced former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s message on shared global responsibility, highlighting the importance of collective action and cooperation in addressing humanitarian needs and protecting vulnerable populations.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians through humanitarian assistance, resilience-building initiatives, and efforts aimed at restoring dignity within affected communities. The organization emphasized that it will continue working to provide relief and strengthen community resilience across the country.
Concluding his message, Prince Adeaga called on Nigerians to act with compassion, protect human dignity, and remain united in supporting those facing hardship, describing World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day as both a moment for reflection and a broader call to action rooted in humanity.
