Switzerland Backs WFP’s UN Humanitarian Air Service in Central African Republic

Dated: January 22, 2026

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a USD 825,000 contribution from the Government of Switzerland to support the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in the Central African Republic (CAR). This funding will ensure that UNHAS continues operating for the next three months, providing reliable air transport to remote and insecure areas where commercial flights are unavailable.

Mark Gordon, WFP Representative and Country Director in CAR, expressed gratitude to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, highlighting that the contribution will help sustain humanitarian operations and support communities in urgent need.

Decades of conflict in CAR have displaced millions of people, disrupted agriculture and essential services, and left one in three residents acutely food insecure. Over 1.6 million people remain forcibly displaced, including internally displaced persons, Sudanese refugees, and returnees.

WFP and its partners continue delivering vital food assistance and supporting recovery efforts, targeting vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and individuals on anti-retroviral treatment.

UNHAS is the only dependable air service for humanitarian workers in CAR, enabling fast and safe access to hard-to-reach areas. In 2025, UNHAS transported 10,389 passengers, moved 89 tons of cargo, and conducted 12 medical evacuations, serving 127 humanitarian organizations and ensuring aid reaches the communities that need it most.
