The Ministry of Education and the Association of Municipalities of Honduras (AMHON) have recognized more than 100 municipalities with the Champions for Education awards for their outstanding efforts in improving educational indicators. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Education, AMHON, and the Ministry of Governance, Justice and Decentralization, received technical and financial support from UNICEF Honduras, UNDP, and other strategic partners. Minister of Education Daniel Esponda emphasized that the initiative fosters true transformation at the municipal level, accelerating school enrollment and improving local education systems.
A total of 102 municipalities were awarded diplomas under the slogan “Educated Municipality, Developed Municipality.” Participating municipalities showcased innovative practices such as door-to-door outreach to identify out-of-school children, school infrastructure improvements, teacher subsidies, free school transport routes, and the provision of school supplies and scholarships. These efforts were complemented by a multilevel governance mechanism to improve coordination between national and local authorities, along with evaluation practices and an information system to monitor progress.
Educational management capacities were strengthened in 42 municipalities, and an interactive municipal education data platform was developed, systematizing more than 102 best practices across the country. AMHON President Nelson Castellanos described the day as “historic,” highlighting that the 102 mayors demonstrated a shared commitment to building education through collective effort, credibility, and determination.
Municipal funds supported 1,031 teachers, the construction of over 720 schools, and more than 414 water and sanitation projects. In 2025 alone, over 142,000 children benefited from school supplies, free transport, scholarships, and medical care, while 231,000 students benefited from the Educational Networks Development Project. The initiative has become a national movement, emphasizing the motto “To educate is to develop” and fostering stronger collaboration between municipal leaders, education offices, and communities.
This recognition not only celebrates achievements but also provides municipalities with tools for advocacy, legitimacy, and community cohesion, making the Champions for Education initiative a high-impact strategic effort for local development in Honduras.
