Swedfund, the Swedish government’s development finance institution, has committed US$600,000 to Jacaranda Maternity to support the expansion of affordable, high-quality maternal healthcare services in Kenya. The investment is aimed at strengthening access to safe maternity and neonatal care, particularly for women living in low- and middle-income communities in and around Nairobi.
Jacaranda Maternity has built its reputation by offering patient-centred maternity services at prices that are significantly lower than those charged by traditional private healthcare providers. This positions the organisation as an important bridge between overcrowded public hospitals and costly private facilities, helping more women access quality maternal care that is both safe and affordable.
The new funding from Swedfund will be used to expand Jacaranda Maternity’s hospital network by opening additional facilities and strengthening its existing services. The investment will also support upgrades to neonatal care units, particularly for preterm and high-risk newborns, as well as improvements to current clinical infrastructure so the organisation can better manage rising patient demand.
Jacaranda Maternity has set a goal of growing its network to six fully operational hospitals. Reaching this scale is expected to help the organisation achieve financial sustainability while continuing to maintain its commitment to affordable care. This growth strategy is designed not only to expand access but also to ensure that the model remains viable over the long term.
The planned expansion is expected to increase the number of births Jacaranda Maternity can safely handle, while also helping to reduce maternal and neonatal complications. By strengthening both capacity and quality of care, the organisation aims to further establish itself as a leading example of accessible maternal healthcare delivery in Kenya.
Overall, Swedfund’s US$600,000 commitment represents a targeted investment in improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Kenya. By backing Jacaranda Maternity’s expansion, the funding will help extend affordable and reliable maternity care to more underserved communities, while supporting a scalable healthcare model that addresses one of the country’s most pressing public health needs.
