In 2025, the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group provided €1.7 billion in new financing in Austria, focusing on key areas such as industrial innovation, clean energy, modern infrastructure, and affordable housing. This investment has triggered a total of €4.4 billion in projects, strengthening Austria’s competitiveness and sustainability.
Renewable energy accounted for 44 percent of the financing, with €751 million allocated to projects including a €200 million expansion of hydropower by Energie AG Oberösterreich and a €57 million solar park and battery storage system in Burgenland funded for Püspök Erneuerbare Energie GmbH. These initiatives are aimed at increasing renewable energy capacity, stabilizing the electricity grid, and enhancing energy independence. Additional projects include converting a former basalt quarry near Graz into a sustainable district heating plant to supply up to 18 percent of local heat demand.
Investments in innovation and digitalization rose by 27 percent compared to 2024, benefiting companies such as AMAG Austria Metall AG and a range of small and medium-sized enterprises. The European Investment Fund (EIF) supported SMEs with €250 million in guarantees, enabling favorable financing for over 200 companies to invest in innovation, employment, and regional development.
The EIB Group also continued its long-term partnership with Erste Bank to support residential construction. A €200 million loan was directed toward energy-efficient, non-profit rental housing projects in Vienna and other regions, bringing total support for housing over the past six years to €800 million. These investments help address housing shortages while promoting sustainable construction practices.
With a strong project pipeline, the EIB Group aims to continue advancing Austria’s green, social, and digital transformation in 2026, supporting initiatives that align with EU strategic priorities and the Paris Climate Agreement. Nearly 60 percent of its financing contributes directly to climate action, adaptation, and environmental sustainability.
