RADIANT YACU, Rwanda’s first and only dedicated microinsurance company, has been awarded the €100,000 European Microfinance Award 2025 (EMA2025) in recognition of its pioneering work in inclusive insurance. The award, presented at the European Investment Bank (EIB), acknowledges RADIANT YACU’s innovative efforts to provide health insurance to underserved rural communities, helping them manage risks and absorb shocks that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
Established in 2005, the European Microfinance Award highlights organizations demonstrating exceptional innovation and commitment in the microfinance sector. The 2025 theme, “Building Resilience through Inclusive Insurance,” emphasizes the role of accessible insurance in supporting low-income households facing climate, health, and financial shocks. Out of 103 applications from 43 countries, RADIANT YACU was selected as one of three finalists, alongside Kenya’s Britam General Insurance and India’s DHAN Foundation.
RADIANT YACU’s model integrates affordable hospital cash and funeral cover with microfinance services, leveraging cooperative group structures to simplify enrollment and ensure sustainable premiums. Complementing Rwanda’s national health insurance, it addresses indirect costs such as lost income and transportation, with a focus on supporting women, children, and other vulnerable groups. Rapid claims settlement through community channels further strengthens the resilience of households and communities.
Emmanuel Nzanana, Operations Manager of RADIANT YACU, dedicated the award to the company’s staff, board members, government partners, and the communities it serves, emphasizing the mission to expand access to inclusive insurance and strengthen resilience in Rwanda. The award ceremony featured keynote remarks highlighting how inclusive insurance transforms uncertainty into opportunity, stressing the need for ongoing innovation and partnerships with governments, development institutions, insurers, and technology providers.
The EMA2025 evaluation process involved 103 applications, of which 44 were approved for detailed assessment, leading to 21 applicants being forwarded to an expert Selection Committee. From 12 semi-finalists, three finalists were chosen, with RADIANT YACU emerging as the winner. Britam General Insurance in Kenya provides low-cost inclusive insurance products for health, agriculture, and property, leveraging partnerships and digital platforms to reach rural communities. DHAN Foundation in India operates community-based mutual insurance for low-income populations, offering health, life, and asset coverage through People Mutuals, with a focus on education, solidarity, and governance to ensure trusted and affordable protection.
RADIANT YACU’s recognition underscores the vital role microinsurance can play in protecting vulnerable populations, strengthening financial resilience, and supporting sustainable development in contexts affected by climate and health challenges.
