The Ontario government has opened applications for the first intake of the 2026–27 Sport Hosting Program, which supports communities and sport organizations in hosting national and international amateur competitions. This initiative is part of the province’s broader strategy to strengthen tourism, create jobs and boost local economies. Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden highlighted that sport tourism continues to play a vital role in Ontario’s economic growth while enhancing the province’s standing as a leading destination for major sporting events.
With an annual investment of $3 million, the program has backed more than 230 events since 2018, generating approximately $220 million in economic benefits. Recent supported events span a wide range of sports, including Canada Basketball’s 2025 Globl Jam in Toronto, the World Junior Girls Golf Championship in St. Catharines, the Women’s Volleyball Nations League in Ottawa and the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League Women’s National Championship in Durham Region. These events not only stimulate local economies but also provide Ontario athletes with high-level competition opportunities close to home.
The program’s support helps communities host events that draw thousands of athletes, volunteers and spectators each year. Funding can be used toward operational costs such as venues, staffing, accommodations, meals and legacy projects that strengthen long-term sport development. Alongside this initiative, Ontario continues to invest in community sport infrastructure, broadening future hosting opportunities across the province.
Sport leaders from various national organizations praised the program’s impact, noting its role in enhancing event quality, boosting athlete development and promoting community engagement. They emphasized that provincial support has elevated Ontario’s capacity to host world-class competitions, expanded opportunities for youth and parasport athletes, and strengthened the visibility of sports ranging from volleyball and swimming to basketball and golf.
