Members of the Bohlokong Community against Drugs and Crime in Bethlehem, Free State, staged a march on Wednesday to the magistrates court and local police station to submit memorandums demanding urgent action on crime. The group has warned that they may shut down the town if the departments of justice and police fail to respond.
The community expressed frustration that criminals, including known drug dealers, are often evading justice. They highlighted concerns over high crime rates, particularly murders, and called for stronger enforcement measures, faster processing of drug cases in laboratories, and increased street patrols to improve public safety.
The memorandum submitted to the Department of Justice requested a review of cases where suspected drug dealers are granted bail, while the memorandum to the police emphasized the need for better resource allocation and patrols to address the rising crime.
Authorities, including Ntsekiseng Mahlatsi, senior clerk at the Bethlehem Magistrates Court, and Lieutenant-General Kedibone Mokalake, SAPS district commander for Thabo Mofutsanyana, received the memorandums and pledged to provide feedback within 14 days.
