Nigeria has approved a $500 million investment to modernize Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos as part of efforts to improve aviation infrastructure and strengthen connectivity. According to Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, the funding will be used to upgrade airport facilities, enhance operational efficiency, and improve access to one of Africa’s busiest airports.
The modernization program includes the expansion and renovation of airport terminals, particularly Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing reconstruction. Additional works will focus on building new access roads, installing pedestrian walkways between airport facilities, and connecting the airport terminals to Lagos’ rail network. These improvements are expected to make travel more convenient and reduce congestion around the airport.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport, commissioned nearly five decades ago, has faced growing pressure from increasing passenger traffic and aging infrastructure. Limited capacity and outdated facilities have contributed to operational challenges and declining passenger experiences. In 2025, the airport handled approximately 17.94 million passengers, accounting for about 67% of Nigeria’s total air traffic, underscoring its importance to the country’s aviation sector.
Through the modernization initiative, Nigerian authorities aim to expand the airport’s capacity to nearly 20 million passengers annually while aligning its services and infrastructure with international aviation standards. The project is expected to strengthen Lagos’ position as a major regional aviation hub, support economic growth, and improve the overall efficiency of air transport in Nigeria.
