June 4, 2026 — Global — Philanthropist Melinda French Gates has pledged an additional $215 million to improve women’s health worldwide, expanding her focus on maternal care, contraceptive access, and underfunded areas such as menopause research.
The new funding, announced through her philanthropic network Pivotal, brings her total contributions for women’s health to over $600 million in the past two years. French Gates emphasized that women’s health is central to her mission: “It’s just blaringly obvious that women’s health is fundamental — she has to be well to do well in life.”
Key allocations include $40 million to Co-Impact for integrating mental health into maternal and primary care, particularly in Africa, and $10 million to The Menopause Society to expand education and outreach in underserved U.S. communities.
The World Economic Forum notes that women-specific health issues receive only 2% of private healthcare funding, leaving major gaps in research and services. French Gates hopes her philanthropy will inspire other donors and governments to act: “Part of what I’m doing here is sending a signal to say, ‘This is really important. Let’s do something about it.’”
Dr. Stephanie Faubion of The Menopause Society highlighted the impact of the gift, noting that many U.S. counties lack access to menopause-competent clinicians. She stressed that the donation will expand resources and awareness for one of medicine’s most overlooked areas.
French Gates’ commitment underscores the growing role of philanthropy in addressing health challenges amid declining government funding. By spotlighting women’s health, she aims to ensure these issues are no longer invisible and that women everywhere can live healthier, more empowered lives.
