The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a $1.5 billion funding commitment to establish a new programme aimed at creating independent research laboratories designed to tackle major scientific challenges using unconventional approaches.
The initiative, known as NSF X-Labs, will distribute funding over the next decade and is intended to support research models that operate outside traditional academic and institutional structures. According to the agency, the programme reflects a broader effort to encourage more flexible, experimental, and cross-disciplinary forms of scientific investigation.
The new laboratories will focus on “pressing scientific challenges” and are expected to bring together researchers from diverse fields to develop innovative solutions that may not fit within standard grant or university frameworks.
The National Science Foundation said the programme highlights its commitment to expanding how research is conducted in the United States, particularly by supporting independent and non-traditional research environments.
Officials added that NSF X-Labs will complement existing funding mechanisms while opening new pathways for scientific discovery over the coming decade.
