The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) convened a high-level dialogue aimed at strengthening cooperation between Europe and the Americas to advance shared health priorities, including equity, resilience, and improved health system performance. The meeting brought together representatives from governments, international organizations, and technical partners to explore ways to deepen bi-regional collaboration in addressing persistent and emerging public health challenges. The discussions reflect growing recognition that global health issues require coordinated action across regions and institutions to ensure effective and equitable responses.
A key focus of the dialogue was improving health system resilience in both regions, particularly in the context of lessons learned from recent health emergencies and ongoing pressures such as infectious disease threats, noncommunicable diseases, and health workforce constraints. Participants emphasized the importance of stronger preparedness systems, improved regulatory cooperation, and more efficient sharing of knowledge, technologies, and best practices between Europe and the Americas.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of regulatory harmonization and cooperation on medicines and health technologies as a pathway to improving timely access to safe and effective treatments. Strengthening collaboration between regulatory authorities was identified as a key step toward improving health equity, supporting innovation, and ensuring that essential medical products can be more rapidly approved and distributed across regions.
Another major theme was the need to reinforce global health security through coordinated preparedness and response mechanisms. Participants discussed the importance of strengthening supply chains, supporting joint research and development, and building more resilient systems capable of responding to cross-border health threats such as pandemics and emerging diseases. These efforts align with broader global initiatives aimed at improving international health architecture and crisis response capacity.
Overall, the dialogue underscored the strategic value of Europe–Americas cooperation in advancing public health goals, particularly in reducing inequities and strengthening health systems. By fostering closer collaboration between regions, PAHO and its partners aim to build more resilient, equitable, and coordinated health systems capable of addressing both current challenges and future global health risks.
