Afghanistan has been struck by severe flooding and a powerful earthquake in late March and early April 2026, resulting in significant casualties, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to infrastructure. Thousands of families are left without shelter or access to basic necessities, with rural communities being particularly hard hit. Roads, bridges, and essential services have been disrupted, complicating relief efforts and isolating vulnerable populations.
In response, India dispatched a consignment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan on April 5, 2026. The supplies, transported via Kam Air cargo flights and marked with the Indian flag, included kitchen sets, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, and plastic sheets to address immediate shelter, sanitation, and survival needs. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that this effort builds on India’s ongoing humanitarian engagement in Afghanistan, focusing on supporting people directly rather than engaging with political authorities.
India’s relief operation is carried out under the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) framework, consistent with international humanitarian law and principles. The assistance reflects India’s commitment to regional stability and human security, providing aid without conditions and ensuring neutrality. The operation complements efforts by international organizations like the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasizing the importance of timely, coordinated disaster response in fragile states.
By sending emergency relief, India addresses immediate humanitarian needs in Afghanistan while reinforcing the principle that aid should transcend political boundaries. The consignment offers critical support to affected families and underscores the role of legally grounded and coordinated humanitarian interventions in protecting lives during natural disasters.
