Governor Kathy Hochul announced an additional $150 million in financial assistance for municipalities outside New York City to alleviate immediate fiscal pressures. This includes a $100 million increase in Temporary Municipal Assistance, tripling the amount of aid available to cities, towns, and villages. The funding is distributed proportionally according to existing Aid and Incentives for Municipalities (AIM) allocations.
The City of Buffalo will receive a total of $40 million, including a $30 million supplement, while Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers each receive an additional $10 million. An extra $20 million has been dedicated to other fiscally distressed municipalities across the state. These new investments build on prior Executive Budget proposals that added $50 million to Temporary Municipal Assistance to ease local government burdens.
Governor Hochul emphasized her understanding of local government challenges, stating that the additional funding will strengthen municipalities’ financial footing, enabling them to continue providing essential services and keeping residents safe. The expanded Temporary Municipal Assistance program, now totaling $150 million for FY 2027, complements the State’s existing AIM program, which provides general purpose aid to cities, towns, and villages outside New York City.
