Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have announced that New York State will provide an additional $1.5 billion over two years to help address the city’s fiscal challenges. This includes $1 billion in operating support for City Fiscal Year 2026 and $510 million in City Fiscal Year 2027, with $510 million designated as recurring funding to cover costs previously shifted from the state to the city. Of this recurring funding, around $300 million will support youth programs, $150 million restores sales tax receipts that would have otherwise been retained by the state, and $60 million is allocated for public health. The remaining $500 million will be directed toward shared priorities determined through ongoing discussions between city and state officials.
Governor Hochul emphasized that a financially stable New York City strengthens the entire state and noted that this investment will protect essential services and provide a stable fiscal footing. She highlighted the importance of collaboration between the state and the city to support working families. Mayor Mamdani stressed that New Yorkers should not bear the burden of the city’s budget shortfall, citing past fiscal mismanagement. He praised the renewed partnership with the state as a step toward responsible and collaborative governance focused on delivering results for residents.
This funding announcement builds on Governor Hochul’s ongoing support for New York City, including recent commitments to expand universal child care. In recent weeks, the Mayor has reduced the city’s projected budget gap to $7 billion by using in-year reserves, implementing agency savings plans, and accounting for higher-than-expected revenues. The joint efforts of the Mayor and Governor signal a renewed focus on fiscal responsibility, partnership, and creating a balanced budget that serves working New Yorkers.
