The future of climate action is being shaped not in the polished halls of global summits, but in local communities and innovation hubs across the world. In cities like Dakar and Mexico City, young innovators and entrepreneurs are turning the abstract threat of climate change into tangible solutions. The CATAL1.5T Climathons, launched in 2023, have become a dynamic platform connecting West Africa and Latin America, empowering local talent to move from being affected by climate crises to leading its solutions. By December 2025, the program had evolved into a sophisticated engine for climate innovation, demonstrating the power of equipping communities with tools, networks, and knowledge to address environmental challenges.
In West Africa, climate change is an immediate concern affecting water, food, and energy. Across 13 cities from Nouakchott to Cotonou, Climathons have transformed into a recurring institution rather than a one-off event, fostering long-term engagement. Working with local partners, the region generated 166 climate-focused ideas, with 49 projects emphasizing agricultural solutions. These initiatives aim to create opportunities for young people to remain and thrive in rural areas, addressing challenges such as the rural exodus while promoting sustainable development. Participants reported a growing sense of agency, recognizing their vital role in shaping climate resilience within their communities.
In Latin America, the approach to climate innovation has a strong tech focus. From Mexico to Argentina, participation grew from 400 in 2023 to 680 in 2025, reflecting a maturing innovation ecosystem. Latin American Climathons concentrated on high-tech solutions, including electric mobility, decarbonization, and advanced water management systems. The introduction of AI-driven toolkits allowed participants to prototype quickly, professionalizing their ideas and enhancing the likelihood that projects could evolve into startups capable of attracting global investment. This emphasis on scalability ensures that successful concepts continue beyond the event, contributing to long-term, impactful climate solutions in the region.
