The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched the New World Screwworm (NWS) Grand Challenge, a major funding initiative aimed at preventing the spread of this livestock pest and safeguarding U.S. agriculture. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins emphasized that the program is a strategic investment in farmers and ranchers, focusing on protecting the food supply, supporting the rebuilding of cattle herds, and keeping consumer prices low.
Through the Grand Challenge, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will provide up to $100 million to support innovative projects that enhance sterile NWS fly production, improve traps and lures, develop treatments for animals, and strengthen overall preparedness and response strategies. The initiative prioritizes science-driven solutions, collaboration, and the use of advanced tools and technology to prevent NWS incursions from Mexico and Central America.
Eligible applicants are invited to submit proposals by February 23, 2026, and must be registered with the U.S. Government System for Award Management (SAM). Full details on application instructions, eligibility, and program requirements are available on the NWS Grand Challenge webpage, ezFedGrants, and Grants.gov. Additional information about NWS and updates can be found at screwworm.gov.
