The Ontario government is providing the Township of Calvin with up to $405,000 in disaster recovery funding to help cover emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs following severe flooding in June 2025. This support is delivered through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program, which is part of Ontario’s broader plan to protect communities and maintain essential infrastructure.
Heavy rainfall on June 21, 2025, led to widespread flooding in the township, washing out roads and damaging culverts, trees, and powerlines. The MDRA funding will assist the Township of Calvin in repairing roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure impacted by the storm.
Provincial officials emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting municipalities in the aftermath of natural disasters. Vic Fedeli, Member of Provincial Parliament for Nipissing, noted that the funding responds directly to the township’s urgent needs, while Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, highlighted Ontario’s ongoing dedication to protecting communities and ensuring safe and resilient infrastructure.
The MDRA program is designed to help municipalities manage extraordinary emergency costs and repair damage to essential public property, including roads, bridges, and public buildings, caused by natural disasters. Eligible expenses include operating and capital costs exceeding regular municipal budgets and directly linked to disaster response. Environment Canada estimated that up to 87 mm of rain fell in a two-hour period, marking the event as a 1-in-100-year occurrence.
Local leaders welcomed the support, with Mayor Richard Gould expressing gratitude for the provincial assistance and acknowledging the ongoing support from Vic Fedeli. The funding will help the township recover quickly, restore critical infrastructure, and enhance resilience against future extreme weather events.
