The Government of Ecuador hosted a regional Dialogue of Champion Countries of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), bringing together governments from across the Americas to review progress and build on discussions from Geneva, where Ecuador presented its National Implementation Plan (2025–2029). The forum provided an opportunity for countries to strengthen regional collaboration, promote the benefits of well-managed migration, and ensure that migrants are treated with dignity and respect.
Representatives from eight countries shared progress and discussed the positive impacts of well-managed migration. They established concrete commitments on migrant protection, socioeconomic integration, risk management, and climate mobility, emphasizing how inclusive policies, safer migration options, and stronger support systems can improve the daily lives of migrants.
Ecuador’s Vice Minister of Human Mobility highlighted the country’s leadership role in the region and the importance of its National Implementation Plan as a best practice that supports the objectives of the GCM. The event also offered a platform to share good practices, assess regional progress, define commitments for upcoming international forums, and strengthen collaboration among countries and stakeholders using innovative approaches.
Ahead of the 2026 International Migration Review Forum, participants examined achievements, challenges, and best practices in implementing the GCM at global, regional, and national levels, positioning the Dialogue as a key milestone in preparations for the forum.
Discussions included experiences with regular migration pathways, combating trafficking and migrant smuggling, labor and educational integration, and diaspora engagement. Strategies to address climate-related mobility were also explored, aligning with regional priorities during the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
Through this Dialogue, Ecuador reaffirmed its commitment to safe, orderly, and regular migration and strengthened its role as a regional leader. The commitments emerging from the meeting aim to enhance migration governance across the Americas and enable more effective responses to both current and future challenges in human mobility.
