The European Union has formalized a donation of 20 million euros (about R$124 million) to the Amazon Fund during a ceremony held in Belém on November 13, 2025, alongside COP30. The contribution marks the start of European disbursements planned over the next four years.
During the meeting, EU Ambassador Marian Schuegraf and Brazil’s Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, celebrated the implementation of the European contribution. BNDES, which manages the Amazon Fund, also participated, underscoring the importance of international financial cooperation for Brazil’s environmental agenda.
The Amazon Fund, widely recognized as a central instrument for reducing deforestation and promoting sustainable development in the Amazon region, receives a significant boost from this donation. The European Union’s participation reinforces its role in conservation, forest restoration, and the involvement of local and Indigenous communities in governance, ensuring social, climate, and economic impact.
Ambassador Schuegraf highlighted that the donation symbolizes the EU’s renewed commitment to the global environmental agenda, climate justice, and collaboration with Brazil in conservation and sustainable production. Marina Silva emphasized that Brazil’s recent progress in reducing Amazon deforestation by 50% over the last three years enabled partner contributions and that the new resources will support preservation, bioeconomy development, research, and the well-being of Indigenous and traditional communities.
BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante affirmed that the contribution reflects international confidence in the Amazon Fund, BNDES management, and Brazil’s environmental policies. Strengthened cooperation between BNDES, KfW, and the European Union is expected to enhance the Fund’s institutional and technical capacity to deliver impactful results.
This contribution fulfills a commitment made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her 2023 visit to Brazil. The announcement taking place in the Amazon during a major climate conference highlights a new phase of joint action and consolidates trust in the Amazon Fund as a driver of sustainable investment, value creation, stronger production chains, and more inclusive economic development in the region.
