Brazil has announced a landmark pledge of US$72 million to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for the organisation’s 2026–2030 strategic period, reaffirming its role as a key player in global health and vaccine manufacturing. The commitment underscores Brazil’s leadership in South–South cooperation and its dedication to protecting communities across Latin America and beyond.
The announcement, made on the sidelines of a Global Citizen Festival in Belém ahead of the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference, highlights the importance of global collaboration in ensuring access to life-saving vaccines. Brazil’s contribution will help Gavi achieve its goal of protecting 500 million children over the next five years, while also strengthening Latin America’s protection against infectious diseases and ensuring a reliable supply of yellow fever vaccines, which are manufactured in the country.
“Health is always the first to be affected when climate change happens. We will only be safe when the whole world is protected. People circulate and diseases circulate, which is why this global effort is about protecting everyone. Vaccines save lives,” said Dr Alexandre Padilha, Brazil’s Minister of Health.
Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, described Brazil’s pledge as a powerful demonstration of global solidarity and leadership. “As a vaccine producer and a champion of South–South cooperation, Brazil’s support will help protect millions of children and families across Latin America, Africa, and beyond,” she said.
This commitment builds on Brazil’s previous engagement with Gavi through the COVAX Facility and represents a significant boost to Gavi’s sixth five-year strategic period, known as Gavi 6.0, beginning in 2026. Following a successful summit in June 2025, which raised over US$9 billion, Gavi continues to engage with donors to reach its target of US$11.9 billion for the upcoming strategic period.
