The European Investment Bank (EIB), through its development arm EIB Global, has announced €289.5 million in new financing to expand sustainable metro networks in India. This package includes a €240 million loan for the extension of the Nagpur metro and a €49.5 million top-up for the Pune metro, reinforcing the EIB’s commitment to green, safe, and inclusive urban transport in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
The two projects are expected to significantly improve urban mobility by shifting passenger traffic from road-based transport to metro systems. This transition will help reduce carbon emissions, urban air pollution, traffic accidents, and noise, while providing shorter, safer, and more cost-effective commutes. Improved metro access will enhance connectivity to employment, education, and healthcare services for residents across both cities.
In Nagpur, the metro extensions are projected to reduce CO₂ emissions from the city’s transport sector by 22%. Daily metro ridership is anticipated to reach around 190,000 passengers by 2041, representing a 75% increase compared to current figures. The expansion will more than double the metro network’s length, broadening its catchment area and improving accessibility for city residents.
In Pune, the new financing complements the EIB’s previous €600 million investment, supporting the construction of two metro lines covering 31.25 km, 30 stations, and 102 modern metro cars. Since March 2022, the Pune metro has transported 100 million passengers, offering a reliable and eco-friendly alternative to private vehicles. The system has helped reduce congestion and pollution while enhancing safety and accessibility, particularly for women and young commuters.
These operations align with the EU Global Gateway strategy, which promotes sustainable transport as a driver of economic growth, climate action, and improved urban living standards. EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer emphasized that the projects will deliver cleaner air, safer travel, and faster connections for millions, highlighting India as the EIB’s largest transport partner outside Europe, with over €3.6 billion committed since 2016.
