Qatar Charity, supported by charitable contributions from Qatar, is implementing a sustainable water and sanitation project in the rural areas of Aleppo and Idlib governorates in northwestern Syria, aiming to enhance the resilience and stability of conflict-affected communities. The initiative focuses on addressing water scarcity through the use of green energy and the development of critical infrastructure, with an estimated 80,000 beneficiaries expected to benefit from improved access to clean water.
The project seeks to improve residents’ access to reliable water services by installing solar energy systems at water stations, rehabilitating infrastructure, and building the capacity of local personnel to operate and maintain these systems. This approach ensures continuity of service while reducing dependence on traditional energy sources, which are often intermittent and costly.
So far, Qatar Charity has completed the installation of a solar power plant in the Al-Dana area, with additional installations underway in Abyan Semaan, Kafriya, Marea, and Bislia. Work is also progressing to expand water networks in Azaz, Afrin, and Kafriya, aiming to enhance access to safe and clean water in areas with limited government support and insufficient humanitarian funding. The project includes the installation of six solar systems, construction and rehabilitation of an elevated water reservoir, and the expansion or replacement of over 7,000 meters of water network. Local staff are trained on system operations, and the stations are supported for three months with chlorine, spare parts, and fuel for cloudy winter days.
The initiative is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including sustainable energy for water operations, improved water network quality, and rehabilitated infrastructure in the most vulnerable areas. It targets a broad range of beneficiaries, including women, men, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, significantly improving quality of life and community stability.
Local officials have praised the project’s impact, highlighting its role in providing a reliable supply of clean water and meeting critical infrastructure needs. Qatar Charity’s Director in Turkey emphasized that renewable energy is central to this intervention, aligning with the organization’s commitment to sustainability and addressing global challenges such as climate change while delivering essential humanitarian support.
