The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) have signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) at UNDP Headquarters in New York to explore deepening their collaboration in supporting developing countries. This partnership includes plans to establish a UNDP Global Center for Sustainable Development in Shanghai, aimed at enhancing joint initiatives in areas of mutual interest.
UNDP and China have maintained a long-term partnership spanning 45 years, contributing to various phases of China’s development. The announcement coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and UNDP’s 60th anniversary, highlighting their commitment to advancing international collaboration in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Shanghai Global Center for Sustainable Development (SGCSD) is envisioned as a unique platform within UNDP’s global network, leveraging technical expertise to foster collaboration and partnerships. The Center will focus on accelerating green economic transitions through initiatives in the digital economy, trade, and sustainable finance, ultimately supporting developing countries in achieving sustainable development transformations.
Haoliang Xu, UNDP’s Acting Administrator, emphasized that the Center could become a key contributor to advancing sustainable development progress toward 2030. The Center aims to support developing countries through demand-driven policy research, capacity building, co-creation of solutions, and mobilizing resources for sustainable development.
Wang Wentao, China’s Minister of Commerce, highlighted China’s commitment to sharing its development experience in green transitions, digital economy, and trade. He stated that the Center would address the urgent needs of developing countries, helping them accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
