The Ontario government is welcoming a nearly $207 million investment from Northern Transformer Corporation (NTC), a leading Canadian manufacturer of high-voltage power transformers, to establish a new, state-of-the-art facility in Innisfil. This investment marks NTC’s entry into the large power transformer market, creating 151 new jobs and strengthening the province’s energy supply chain. The facility will provide new opportunities for local manufacturers and support Ontario’s broader plan to expand energy infrastructure to power a competitive economy in the G7.
Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli highlighted that Northern Transformer’s investment demonstrates Ontario’s stability and competitiveness as a business partner. The investment aligns with the government’s commitment to creating high-value jobs, strengthening Ontario-made supply chains, and fostering long-term prosperity. The province is providing $10.5 million in support through the Invest Ontario Fund to facilitate the project.
NTC’s new facility will manufacture and test high-voltage transformers with power handling capabilities up to 500kV and 750MVA, essential for large-scale industrial projects, including data centres, mining, and steel manufacturing. By sourcing materials such as wiring, insulation, and electrical steel from Ontario-based suppliers, the project will reinforce domestic supply chains, protect jobs, and enhance competitiveness across the province.
The investment will expand Ontario’s capacity to support grid modernization and electrification initiatives across North America, creating opportunities for the province’s skilled workforce while strengthening domestic supply chains. NTC President and CEO Alexei Miecznikowski emphasized that the facility will boost production, technical capabilities, and innovation, driving regional job creation and supply chain growth.
Government officials and local representatives praised the investment for its economic and community impact. The facility will not only bring high-quality jobs to Innisfil but also strengthen Ontario’s energy sector, promote self-reliance in critical infrastructure, and ensure the province remains competitive amid global uncertainty.
The project benefits from federal support through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario and builds on NTC’s existing facility in Maple, which produces smaller-capacity transformers and employs 150 workers. Since its inception, Invest Ontario has facilitated over $7.6 billion in investments, creating more than 9,700 jobs, reflecting the government’s commitment to a resilient, self-reliant manufacturing sector.
Local leaders, including MPPs and the Mayor of Innisfil, highlighted the significance of the investment for the community, noting its potential to bring economic growth, advanced manufacturing expertise, and a stronger energy grid to the region. Hydro One and other partners also emphasized the importance of Ontario-made transformers in supporting the province’s electricity demand and ensuring energy reliability for years to come.
