A new global initiative to support pandemic preparedness in low- and middle-income countries will be officially launched later this week. The South African Department of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and UNICEF, will lead the launch of the Pandemic Fund.
The initiative aims to enhance South Africa’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to future health emergencies. The upcoming launch event, scheduled to take place in Pretoria, marks a significant development in global health security.
The Pandemic Fund is a global financing mechanism hosted by the World Bank. It provides catalytic funding to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response systems in countries with limited resources.
The launch event will include keynote speeches from both national and international leaders, the introduction of South Africa’s implementation strategy for the fund, and a panel discussion focused on enhancing pandemic preparedness. Additionally, the event will provide opportunities for media interaction and engagement with key stakeholders.
Senior representatives from multiple government departments, including Health; Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development; and Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, are expected to attend the gathering.
