During a visit to the Meals on Wheels service at St. Munchin’s Community Centre in Limerick City, Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister of State for Older People Kieran O’Donnell announced a €2 million increase in 2026 funding for Meals on Wheels organisations nationwide. The additional allocation from the Health Service Executive represents a rise of over 30 percent on last year’s funding, bringing the total dedicated budget to €8.25 million. The funding will support the delivery of more than 3.3 million meals in 2026, in line with the HSE’s National Service Plan.
Funding for Meals on Wheels has grown significantly in recent years, rising from just over €3 million in 2022. The service remains a vital part of community care, particularly in rural areas, helping older people maintain their health and independence. There are currently 319 Meals on Wheels organisations operating across Ireland, delivering meals to more than 18,000 people each month on average.
Government representatives emphasized that the service provides more than nutritious meals, playing an important role in tackling isolation and loneliness by fostering regular social contact. They also acknowledged the commitment of volunteers and community organisations that sustain the nationwide network. The National Meals on Wheels Network, established under Irish Rural Link, continues to support local providers through training, coordination and advocacy, helping older people remain living independently in their own homes.
