The European Union has signed a EUR 6 million grant agreement with Save the Children to launch the “Facilitating Access to Knowledge, Hope, and Education Resilience (FAKHAR)” initiative. This funding will provide safe, inclusive, gender-responsive, and uninterrupted quality learning opportunities for Afghan children, particularly those out-of-school, living with disabilities, or from vulnerable groups.
The FAKHAR initiative aims to improve access to quality education by establishing community-based schools and early childhood centres, supplying essential classroom materials and library books, and enhancing literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Local communities will be actively engaged to ensure the long-term sustainability of these educational efforts.
Veronika Boskovic Pohar, EU Chargée d’Affaires to Afghanistan, highlighted the EU’s commitment to Afghan children, emphasizing that every child deserves a safe and inclusive learning environment. She noted that focusing on girls’ education will not only improve opportunities for them but also foster hope for the nation’s future, as an educated generation is essential to building a better Afghanistan.
Over its 36-month duration, the initiative will focus on three outcomes: improving access to safe learning, enhancing core academic and socio-emotional skills, and increasing community involvement. Activities will include setting up community-based schools, providing learning materials, and supporting green-school initiatives.
Melkamu Kassa, Save the Children Country Director, expressed gratitude to donors and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to protecting and supporting Afghan children. She emphasized that every child deserves access to quality education in a safe environment, with special attention to girls, children with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups, ensuring inclusion and effectiveness across all educational efforts.
