The Minns Labor Government’s 2025–26 Budget includes a $3 million investment to enhance palliative care services across south-western Sydney, improving support for patients and their families. This initiative forms part of the NSW Government’s commitment to delivering World Class End of Life Care.
The funding will enable the South Western Sydney Local Health District to establish a new acute palliative care ward at Campbelltown Hospital and expand the subacute palliative care capacity at Camden Hospital. These improvements aim to provide better access and tailored care for patients at different stages of their palliative journey.
At Campbelltown Hospital, the acute palliative ward will serve patients who continue to receive treatments such as radiation or dialysis but require urgent symptom management. The facility will include a dedicated ward with a modern nurse call system and upgraded IT infrastructure to support effective care delivery.
At Camden Hospital, the subacute ward will be created by converting the old maternity unit into a specialised palliative care space. This upgrade includes renovated bathrooms, a new nurse call system, and patient experience features such as an outdoor courtyard to promote wellbeing and comfort during longer-term stays.
Community input from staff and patients will guide the planning and design of both facilities, ensuring the services are practical, culturally respectful, and aligned with the historic value of the Camden Hospital site
