Applications Now Open for Green Tourism Incentive Programme in South Africa

Dated: October 22, 2024

The Green Tourism Incentive Programme (GTIP) has officially opened its applications, aiming to support privately-owned tourism enterprises in South Africa. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, encourages businesses to adopt sustainable practices by reducing energy and water consumption. The deadline for applications is set for February 28, 2025.

Key Takeaways

  • Deadline: Applications close on February 28, 2025.
  • Funding: Grants cover 50% to 90% of costs, up to R1 million.
  • Eligibility: Open to privately-owned tourism establishments, including accommodations and attractions.

Overview of the Green Tourism Incentive Programme

The GTIP is designed to promote responsible tourism practices among privately-owned tourism enterprises. By providing financial assistance for energy and water efficiency solutions, the program aims to foster a more sustainable tourism sector in South Africa. The initiative focuses on various sustainable technologies and practices that can significantly reduce operational costs and environmental impact.

Focus Areas of the Programme

The GTIP emphasizes the following areas for funding:

  • Renewable Energy Systems: Solar and wind energy solutions.
  • Energy and Water Efficient Equipment: This includes solar water heaters, heat pumps, and HVAC systems.
  • Lighting Solutions: Solar and LED lighting options.
  • Resource Management Policies: Development of policies for linen reuse and guest awareness programs.
  • Water Efficiency Systems: Installation of dual flush toilets, aerated taps, and rainwater harvesting systems.

Programme Approach

The GTIP offers a structured approach to funding:

  1. Resource Efficiency Audit: The program covers the full cost of a new audit or the review of an existing one.
  2. Grant Funding: Funding is available on a sliding scale, covering 50% to 90% of the total costs, capped at R1 million.
  3. Direct Payments: Grant funding is paid directly to service providers or installers.

Application Phases

The application process consists of two distinct phases:

  • Phase 1: Conducting an energy and water efficiency audit to identify suitable solutions.
  • Phase 2: Submitting an application for funding to implement the identified solutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the GTIP, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a privately-owned tourism establishment providing direct services to tourists.
  • New establishments must be at advanced stages of development with a detailed business plan.
  • Must be classified as an Exempt Micro Enterprise (annual revenue below R5 million) or a Qualifying Small Enterprise (annual revenue between R5 million and R45 million).
  • Commit to a resource efficiency audit and provide historical consumption data.
  • Obtain quotations from at least three service providers for the proposed solutions.

Conclusion

The Green Tourism Incentive Programme represents a significant opportunity for South African tourism enterprises to enhance their sustainability efforts. By adopting energy and water-efficient practices, businesses can not only reduce their operational costs but also contribute to a greener future for the tourism industry. Interested parties are encouraged to apply before the February 28, 2025 deadline to take advantage of this initiative.
