The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), together with the European Union, Austria, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the TaiwanBusiness–EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund, has partnered with the Greater Amman Municipality to support a community clean-up initiative in Amman aimed at improving sustainable waste management and environmental awareness.
The event took place at Queen Rania Abdalla Park on 4 July 2026 and brought together youth, families, local authorities, and community stakeholders. Participants engaged in hands-on clean-up activities designed to promote responsible waste disposal and encourage greater public participation in environmental protection efforts.
Alongside the clean-up activities, discussions were held between community members, municipal representatives, and environmental experts to address waste management challenges and explore practical solutions. The initiative also included educational activities aimed at raising awareness among children and families about environmental responsibility.
Organizers emphasized that the programme is part of a broader effort to strengthen solid waste management systems in Amman while promoting more sustainable urban development. It complements ongoing infrastructure investments, including landfill improvements and energy recovery systems that convert waste into electricity.
The EBRD has been working with the Greater Amman Municipality since 2015 to improve waste management services and environmental infrastructure. These efforts include financing modern landfill facilities and supporting projects that capture landfill gas for energy production.
Amman’s participation in the EBRD Green Cities programme further supports long-term sustainability goals by helping the city identify environmental priorities and implement targeted investments. Previous initiatives have also included school-based awareness campaigns to promote recycling and environmental education among students.
The latest community clean-up initiative highlights the importance of combining infrastructure development with public engagement to achieve lasting improvements in environmental management. By involving residents directly, the programme aims to build stronger awareness and encourage more sustainable behaviors across the city.
