The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved a $30 million climate adaptation project aimed at strengthening climate resilience and protecting food security in Tajikistan, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The initiative is expected to directly benefit around 73,500 people in climate-vulnerable regions of the country.
Implemented in partnership with Tajikistan’s Committee for Environmental Protection and its Centre for Implementation of Investment Projects, the program will focus on climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable water management, improved climate information systems, and stronger local institutional capacity.
Tajikistan is increasingly affected by climate change impacts, including rising temperatures, glacier retreat, droughts, floods, and water shortages. These challenges are placing significant pressure on rural livelihoods and agricultural systems, which remain central to the country’s economy and food security.
The project aims to help communities better anticipate and adapt to climate shocks while strengthening both local and national resilience mechanisms. It also aligns with Tajikistan’s broader climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and its national adaptation strategies.
WFP, acting as the GCF-accredited entity for implementation, will oversee project delivery in coordination with government authorities, development partners, and local communities. Officials emphasized that the initiative represents a key step toward building long-term resilience and safeguarding vulnerable populations from the growing impacts of climate change.
