Dublin — June 3, 2026 — Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA), with a major extension to include children aged 2 and 3 for the first time.
The scheme provides a once-off payment to help families with the cost of school clothing and footwear. This year, the Government is investing €60.4 million, with more than 109,000 families set to receive payments automatically in July. The extension is expected to benefit an additional 37,000 children, easing financial pressure on parents of preschool-aged children.
The 2026 rates are set at €160 for children aged 2–11 and €285 for children aged 12 and over in second-level education. Minister Calleary emphasized the importance of supporting families at a critical time: “This means thousands more families across the country will receive practical support at a time when it matters most.”
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley welcomed the move, noting that early years education is vital and the allowance will help parents as children begin their learning journey.
Most payments will be issued automatically, with families receiving confirmation via MyWelfare accounts or by post. For those not automatically included, applications can be made online at MyWelfare.ie until September 30, 2026.
This year’s expansion underscores the Government’s commitment to reducing the financial burden of education and ensuring children of all ages have the best possible start.
