Northern Trust Strengthens Ireland Operations with New Licensed Banking Branch

Dated: June 16, 2026

Northern Trust has received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland to establish The Northern Trust Company, Ireland Branch. The new banking branch will allow Northern Trust to provide custodial, banking, and capital markets services to Ireland-domiciled clients, including domestically regulated banking services.

The Ireland Branch will complement Northern Trust Global Services S.E., the company’s continental European bank based in Luxembourg, which was established in March 2019. Together, these EU banking institutions will support Northern Trust’s ability to serve European Union-domiciled clients within the region and align with evolving EU regulatory requirements.

The establishment of the Ireland Branch forms part of Northern Trust’s broader European expansion strategy. The move reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening its domestic client service model and adapting to regulatory frameworks such as the EU’s Sixth Capital Requirements Directive and Third Capital Requirements Regulations, which introduce new rules for third-country credit institution branches serving EU clients.

Meliosa O’Caoimh, Northern Trust’s country head of Ireland, said the approval reinforces Ireland’s importance as a strategic location for the company. She highlighted Northern Trust’s more than 1,800 colleagues in Ireland and said the new branch marks another milestone in the company’s 25-year presence in the country.

Clive Bellows, co-president of Asset Servicing and president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the development strengthens Northern Trust’s European client franchise and supports the company’s long-term growth strategy in the region. He added that the Ireland Branch will help improve resilience, productivity, and client service across Northern Trust’s operating model.

Northern Trust has served Irish clients since 1989 and established offices in Dublin in 2000 and Limerick in 2007. The company has played a significant role in Ireland’s funds industry, including servicing the first Irish UCITS fund. Today, Northern Trust’s Irish operations support fund managers, institutional investors, asset managers, insurance companies, and multinational pension funds around the world.
