The Government of Madagascar officially inaugurated the modernized RN13 National Road on June 12 and 13, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development efforts. The strategic highway connects Ambovombe and Tolagnaro, improving connectivity across the southern regions of Androy and Anosy while supporting economic growth and regional integration.
The RN13 modernization is part of a wider program to upgrade Madagascar’s priority road network. The project was financed through a €110 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and a €115 million grant from the European Union (EU), reflecting a strong partnership aimed at advancing the country’s economic and social development.
The upgraded road includes 108 kilometers of reconstructed asphalt pavement, rehabilitated bridges, improved drainage infrastructure, enhanced road safety measures, and a new weighing station designed to protect the roadway from excessive freight loads. These improvements have significantly reduced travel times and transportation costs, making it easier for businesses, farmers, and traders to access markets and transport goods efficiently.
The project is already delivering positive impacts for local communities by improving mobility and strengthening access to essential services such as healthcare and education. The modernized corridor is also creating economic opportunities, supporting local employment, and contributing to safer travel conditions throughout the region.
Implemented in accordance with environmental and social standards, the RN13 project represents a sustainable investment in Madagascar’s future. The inauguration highlights the successful collaboration between Madagascar, the European Union, and the European Investment Bank in promoting inclusive growth, reducing regional isolation, and supporting long-term development in the south of the country.
