Kenya has strengthened its technology and infrastructure ambitions with the completion of a new 400 kV transmission line and substation connecting Konza Technopolis to the national electricity grid. The project is expected to improve power reliability and support economic growth in southeastern Kenya.
The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has energized the Isinya–Konza transmission line and the Konza substation, creating a more stable electricity supply for the country’s flagship smart-city project. The infrastructure will help meet the growing energy needs of Konza Technopolis, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Nairobi.
The $65 million project was financed through support from the Export-Import Bank of China and the Kenyan government. It includes a 48-kilometre double-circuit transmission line and a high-capacity substation equipped with multiple transformers designed to improve electricity distribution.
The new connection is expected to strengthen Kenya’s national power network, reduce pressure on existing infrastructure, and support industrial, commercial, and residential development in surrounding counties including Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni.
Konza Technopolis, often referred to as Kenya’s “Silicon Savannah,” is a key part of the country’s Vision 2030 development strategy. The smart city is designed to attract technology companies, research centres, and innovation-focused businesses while contributing to national economic growth.
The new power infrastructure will also allow Konza to access electricity from Kenya’s major renewable energy sources, including geothermal, wind, and hydropower projects. This will support the country’s clean energy goals while creating a stronger foundation for future digital and industrial development.
