The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed concern over recent violence across parts of the United Kingdom, following a statement issued in Geneva on June 11, 2026 by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk.
The statement comes in response to unrest linked to a recent attack in Belfast and the release of bodycam footage related to a December 2025 incident in Southampton. Türk condemned the violence and expressed sympathy for victims and affected communities, while noting that investigations are underway and accountability must follow.
The UN rights chief warned that some actors are exploiting the incidents to promote divisive narratives based on race and ethnicity, which he said has contributed to rising tensions. He stressed that scapegoating, dehumanization, and violence against individuals, including attacks on homes and property, are unacceptable under any circumstances.
The statement also emphasized the responsibility of political leaders to avoid rhetoric that could inflame tensions or stigmatize communities. It further called on social media platforms to take stronger action against hate speech and content that could incite violence.
Overall, the OHCHR urged restraint, accountability, and responsible communication from both public figures and digital platforms, highlighting the need to prevent further escalation and protect affected communities.
