The United Nations Office for Project Services has highlighted ongoing progress in Sierra Leone’s renewable energy transition through the Salone Off-Grid Renewable Energy Acceleration (SOGREA) initiative, a large-scale programme designed to expand electricity access using solar mini-grids in rural communities across the country.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the governments of Sierra Leone and Denmark, the European Union, and Sustainable Energy for All. It aims to address the country’s significant energy access gap, where only a small share of rural populations currently have reliable electricity.
As part of the latest developments in June 2026, UNOPS reported a two-day investment support workshop that brought together private sector developers, government representatives, and international partners. The session focused on preparing bidders to design, finance, and operate green mini-grids, while also clarifying regulatory and financial requirements for project implementation.
The initiative is designed to reduce investment risks and improve the commercial viability of rural electrification projects by providing performance-based capital support tied to verified milestones. This approach is intended to attract private sector participation while ensuring affordability for households and businesses.
SOGREA is expected to expand electricity access to dozens of rural communities, benefiting thousands of households and small businesses through decentralized solar mini-grid systems. The programme also supports Sierra Leone’s national goal of increasing renewable energy use and expanding rural electrification by 2027.
Government leaders have emphasized that improved energy access is essential for economic development, job creation, and social progress. The initiative is also aligned with broader goals to reduce reliance on traditional biomass, improve educational and healthcare services, and support local enterprise development.
UNOPS and its partners describe the project as a scalable model for clean energy expansion, combining public funding, private investment, and technical assistance to accelerate progress toward universal energy access.
