The International Labour Organization (ILO) has launched a new global Just Transition Policy Gateway, a digital platform designed to help countries design and implement policies that ensure climate action also supports decent work, social protection, and economic inclusion.
Announced in Geneva on 11 June 2026, the platform aims to bridge the gap between global climate commitments and real-world policy implementation. It provides policymakers, employers’ groups, and workers’ organizations with access to practical tools, case studies, and lessons learned from countries already advancing “just transition” strategies.
According to the ILO, the initiative responds to growing demand from governments seeking guidance on how to align environmental sustainability with job creation and social equity. The platform highlights how countries are increasingly integrating employment policy, skills development, enterprise support, and social protection into climate and development planning.
ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo emphasized that successful transitions must place people at the center of economic and environmental change. He noted that social dialogue between governments, employers, and workers is essential to ensuring that climate policies lead to inclusive and sustainable development outcomes.
The Just Transition Policy Gateway also features real-world policy experiences, including challenges faced during implementation, in order to help countries learn from one another and improve policy design. It focuses on linking environmental goals with labour market reforms, skills training systems, and social protection frameworks.
Officials involved in the launch highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing across countries, stressing that no single model can be applied universally. Instead, the platform encourages adaptation of policies to national contexts through collaboration and peer learning.
Developed with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the initiative is part of broader international efforts under the Global Coalition for Social Justice. The ILO plans to expand the platform over time, including the introduction of a policy help desk to provide tailored technical assistance to countries.
By promoting integrated approaches to climate action and employment, the platform is expected to support more inclusive development pathways as countries navigate the economic and social impacts of the global green transition.
