The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a new $20 million trade finance facility for BANK OF AFRICA-BENIN (BOA-BENIN) to strengthen trade financing and support private sector growth in Benin.
The funding, provided through the EBRD’s Trade Facilitation Programme, is designed to enhance financing for import and export operations while supporting the local distribution of essential products. The facility will help finance strategic goods such as food products, agricultural commodities, industrial equipment, and construction materials.
Under the agreement, the EBRD will issue guarantees to international confirming banks and provide short-term financing solutions that improve access to trade-related funding. The initiative is expected to increase opportunities for Beninese businesses to engage in regional and international markets while strengthening the country’s trade ecosystem.
In addition to financial support, the partnership includes technical assistance focused on digital transformation and cybersecurity. These measures aim to improve BOA-BENIN’s operational capabilities and strengthen its resilience in an increasingly digital financial environment.
EBRD officials stated that the project reflects the bank’s commitment to supporting resilient financial institutions and promoting private sector-led economic growth in Benin. The partnership is also expected to help BOA-BENIN expand its correspondent banking network and enhance services for local businesses involved in international trade.
Benin became an EBRD shareholder in 2024 and officially joined the bank’s countries of operation in 2025. Since then, the EBRD has focused on supporting sustainable infrastructure development, business modernization, and stronger economic institutions across the country.
The new trade finance facility marks an important step in expanding access to finance for Beninese companies, strengthening trade flows, and supporting long-term economic development in one of West Africa’s growing economies.
