The New Zealand Government has announced a new initiative aimed at strengthening leadership in the primary industries through the creation of the “Minister of Agriculture Future Leaders Scholarship,” according to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Hon Todd McClay Todd McClay.
The programme will provide three scholarships each year to emerging farmers and rural professionals, supporting their development into future leaders across agriculture, horticulture, and forestry sectors. Each recipient will receive a $10,000 grant to fund domestic or international study, professional development, and industry experience.
The scholarship is designed to build governance capability and practical leadership skills within New Zealand’s rural economy. It aims to help young farmers gain exposure to best practices, broaden their understanding of the sector, and develop the confidence needed to take on leadership roles in the future.
The Ministry for Primary Industries will oversee implementation of the programme in collaboration with sector stakeholders, ensuring that selection criteria are fair, transparent, and aligned with capability gaps in rural governance and industry development.
Officials say the initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen long-term resilience and success in New Zealand’s primary sector by investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders.
