A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani province in the southern Philippines on June 8, 2026, triggering tsunami warnings and widespread evacuations across multiple coastal areas. The disaster has left at least 15 people dead and injured 129 others, according to the Office of Civil Defense.
The quake’s impact was felt across five regions, including SOCCSKSARGEN, the Davao Region, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and parts of Eastern Visayas. The strongest shaking was recorded in Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Davao Occidental, where infrastructure damage and building collapses were reported.
Following the initial tremor, strong aftershocks continued to affect the region, heightening fears of further structural damage and complicating rescue and relief operations. Authorities issued tsunami warnings for nine coastal provinces, prompting immediate evacuation orders for vulnerable communities.
Humanitarian organizations, including CARE Philippines, have begun coordinating with local governments and disaster response agencies to assess needs and prepare emergency assistance. Relief efforts are focusing on providing shelter, medical support, clean water, and protection for displaced populations.
Officials warn that coastal communities remain at particular risk due to fragile housing and exposure to potential tsunami surges. Disruptions to essential services such as healthcare, water supply, and transportation are further increasing the vulnerability of affected populations.
The Philippines, which is widely considered one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, regularly experiences earthquakes and typhoons. Repeated natural disasters in recent years have left many communities in a prolonged state of recovery, with ongoing humanitarian and psychological impacts, particularly among women and children who are often the most affected in crisis situations.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity as emergency response teams work to reach isolated areas and provide assistance to affected families.
