The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing €22.5 million in financing to support a joint initiative between Germany-based WEPA Group and Spanish company Honext Material. The partnership aims to manufacture and distribute high-quality circular fibreboards designed for sustainable construction and interior design applications across Europe.
The fibreboards are engineered to combine high strength, lightweight properties, and strong acoustic performance, making them suitable for a wide range of building and interior projects. Produced from recycled fibres and supplementary materials, the boards are fully recyclable at the end of their lifecycle, supporting circular economy principles and reducing waste in the construction industry.
The production facility will be built in Kriebstein, Saxony, Germany, and will focus on manufacturing fibreboards using 100% recycled materials. The project is considered an important example of industrial innovation and sustainable manufacturing in Europe. EIB financing for the initiative is backed by the InvestEU programme, which supports projects aligned with the European Union’s climate and sustainability goals.
WEPA Group described the collaboration as a major circular economy initiative that demonstrates how family-owned businesses can contribute to sustainable industrial transformation in Europe. The company emphasized the project’s role in advancing environmentally friendly manufacturing while strengthening Europe’s circular economy ecosystem.
EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer highlighted that the financing supports a strategic partnership between a German manufacturer and a Spanish cleantech startup to develop sustainable construction materials that can help lower emissions, reduce construction costs, and strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness and strategic autonomy.
Honext Material, headquartered in Barcelona, has spent more than a decade developing proprietary technology that transforms cellulose-based industrial waste into fully recyclable construction boards. The company’s products are already being used in architectural and interior projects across Europe as sustainable alternatives to traditional building materials.
The initiative reflects growing European investment in circular construction solutions and sustainable industrial innovation, while also promoting resource efficiency and low-carbon development in the building sector.
