The Government of Canada is investing in youth employment and skills development to help young Canadians build rewarding careers, particularly in the natural resource sectors.
A $30 million initiative announced by Ministers Tim Hodgson and Patty Hajdu will create 900 employment and skills training opportunities over two years across industries such as energy, forestry, mining, earth sciences, and clean technology.
The funding is delivered through the Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP) – Green Jobs, which allows employers to hire, train, and mentor youth aged 15 to 30 for up to 12 months. The program provides hands-on experience, helping participants develop marketable skills while contributing to Canada’s clean economy. Since its launch in 2017, STIP – Green Jobs has created over 6,000 opportunities nationwide, with approximately 80 percent of participants securing full-time employment after completing the program.
STIP – Green Jobs is part of the broader Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), which supports young Canadians in successfully transitioning into the labour market and prepares them for careers in emerging low-carbon and technology-driven sectors.
The initiative aims to strengthen Canada’s climate competitiveness while empowering youth with practical experience, connecting them to meaningful work, and supporting employers in building a skilled, inclusive, and diverse workforce.
