The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Cuba have taken steps to strengthen support systems for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Zambia following high-level talks in Lusaka. ILO Country Office Director for Zambia and Malawi, Mr. Wellington Chibebe, met with Cuban Ambassador Mrs. Marileydis Duenas Morales to explore cooperation aimed at improving the lives and opportunities of PWDs.
Cuba pledged support to revamp Zambia’s National Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre (NVRC) through technical assessments and expert exchange visits, modernizing the centre and enhancing its capacity to provide high-quality vocational training. The partnership will also extend to Miracle cataract operations, providing cost-effective surgeries to restore sight to those affected by preventable blindness, offering life-changing support to many Zambians.
Mr. Chibebe emphasized that disability inclusion is central to the ILO’s mandate and welcomed Cuba’s commitment, noting that the collaboration will boost national efforts to ensure equal access to skills, employment, and social protection. The strengthened cooperation is expected to expand training opportunities, improve livelihoods, and advance a more inclusive and equitable future for Persons with Disabilities across Zambia.
